The dreams carried over to sandlot games. I was Jimmy Moretti when I played Quarterback, Charlie Young at Receiver or Jack Dailey when I played Linebacker. When it was my turn in 1970 and 1971, those games were some of my lifetime favorites with teammates Walden, Hogan, Chambliss, Libordis, Sirianis, Sciottis, Kelly, Cleveland, Davidson, Angell, Babcock, Hollands, Mobley, Tillman and several others. Dugan was one of the top offensive lineman prospects, earning a full scholarship to play football at Penn State and had the opportunity to participate in four bowl games — two Fiesta Bowls, Sugar Bowl and Liberty Bowl 1977. Dugan attended Penn State University from 1977-1981 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice in 1986. He was an “All American” in 1980, which honors the best player at each position. The 1980 NCAA All-America team consisted of a few Sunday great, such as, John Elway, Cris Colinsworth, Herschel Walker, Leonard Mitchell, Ronny Lot, Lawrence Taylor, John Scully, and Mike Singletary. Dugan a 6’x4”, 275 right tackle was the 58th overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Dugan also played with Minnesota-1984 and with the Baltimore Stars of the USFL in their championship season in 1985 and the New York Giants-1987. |

 Coach BuischMark began coaching with Hornell in 1988 and retired from the Varsity Defensive Coordinator position after the 2007 season. Mark continued to have involvement with Hornell Football as Head Modified Coach in 2009 and as a Varsity Assistant during State Championship years of 2009, 2010, 2011. He and his wife, Kelly, are kept busy with their three boys (Brendan, Anthony and Collin). Brendan and Anthony are currently coming through the Hornell Football Program. Mark played as a Hornell Red Raider 1980-1983. |

 Coach CarrettoMickey Carretto began coaching with Hornell in 1998 through 2008 as Offensive Line and Linebackers coach. He retired from his position following the 2008 season and continued volunteering as an assistant with the Hornell Football Program through the State Championship years of 2009, 2010, 2011. Mickey played as a Red Raider 1982-1985. Mickey and his wife Jen, both Hornell teachers, have three daughters - Sophia, Stella, and Silvia. Mickey and Jen own and operate a dog boarding business as well. |

| Coach Young Bob Young retired from the Hornell Football Program as Head JV Coach following the 2008 season and before then he served as an Assistant JV coach since 1996. Thanks to Bob for his years of dedication to Hornell Football. Bob played as a Red Raider 1967-1970 as did his three sons, Brian ('98), Mark ('01) and Scott ('06). Brian was inducted into Hornell's Hall of Fame in 2008. Bob and wife Martha retired from area school districts following the 2008/2009 school year. |

Hornell Football started years before I entered
High School. My passion for the game was created by the stars of
the Red Raiders in the late sixties. I loved going to the games and
dreamed of playing in the current Baseball Stadium.
A paragraph cannot do justice to the impact
that Gene Mastin, Red Raider Football and Hornell High School played
in my life. Despite experiencing both individual and team success
prior to moving to Hornell, I did not realize what it meant to be
a part of a football family. The coaching staff, school and town
combine to create an atmosphere where community pride comes with
wearing a Red Raider jersey. A standard of excellence is set and
then the instruction, support and encouragement is given to reach
that level. Although we won our share of games, the true measure
of our time were the lessons in commitment, preparation, toughness
and perseverance that led us to reach for our potential. My decision
to pursue a career in coaching and any success I have experienced
since can be directly traced to the formative and positive experience
of playing for the Red Raiders. I will always be grateful and proud
to have played for Gene Mastin and to represent him and Hornell football
with all future achievements.
Bill Dugan, Class of 1977 - Dugan a nine varsity letterman, was a three-year starter in football, basketball and track. He is often referred to as the greatest offensive lineman in the history of the program at HHS. He was the first Red Raider to be selected to the All-Greater Rochester First Team as well as All-MYS in the large school division. He was also an All-Sullivan Trail First Team selection. In track, he set the school standard in the shot put at 63-11, a record which still stands today and may never be broken. It was the longest NYS throw of the 1977 season and the third longest in Section V.
Dwyer was named Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year and finished his freshman season setting a new single-season record at Alfred University with 1,412. The former record was 1,406 yards set in 2007. Alfred University Saxons season ended with an appearance in the NCAA Division III East Region Final vs. second ranked Mt. Union on December 4, 2010. See more about Alfred University Saxons >> 2011: Played in 11 games and led the team in rushing with 980 yards a team-high 191 carries, with nine rushing touchdowns. His 67-yard run against Hartwick was the longest run from scrimmage by an AU player in 2011…Caught 15 passes for 87 yards and returned 21 kick-offs for 478 yards and a touchdown (85 yards, vs. Utica)…Was named a First Team Empire 8 all-star as a tailback and a Second Team pick as a return man. 2012: Played in seven games. Gained 296 yards on 65 carries and scored two touchdowns. Caught seven passes for 40 yards. Returned six kickoffs for 111 yards. Recorded a tackle. Prior to AU he helped lead the Hornell Red Raiders to their first State Championship Title in 2009. Austin was the 2009 New York State Class B Player of Year, AGR Player of the Year, State Finals MVP and Section V single-season rushing record with 2,836 at Hornell High School. David Zapata: Zapata was a first-team All-State selection at running back as a sophomore and junior, rushing for 5820 yards and 77 touchdowns combined. He is currently the ninth all time leading rusher over his career in New York State history. Section V All-Time Rushing Record - 6,101 Yards May 15, 2009, Congratulations Dave Zapata ('08 HHS Grad) on graduating at the Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS). David was named MVP of the 2008 NAPS football team. David graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, May 2013 andwas selected as an officer into the prestigous community of Surface Warfare. Brian Young '98 (left) and Mike Davidson '73 (right)
were inducted into Hornell High School Sports Hall of Fame in front of a large Homecoming crowd. Brian played and started on all four years on the varsity football (and basketball) teams and was a member of the 1997 Section V Class B Champion Red Raiders. He earned a number of awards in both basketball and football. Awards in football included three conference all-star selections, 1997 Section V Class B MVP, 2nd team spot on the All-NYS team. He also set the school record for most passing yards in a season. Following graduation in Hornell, Brian attended Ithaca College and broke the passing record for the Ithaca Bombers. Mike served as JV football coach at Hornell High School from 1984 through 1990, and again from 1998 through 2006. His teams include four undefeated teams. He was an integral part of the Section V varsity titles in 1987, 1988, 2004 and 2005. Mike remains active with the Red Raider football program and is a Hornell businessman and community leader. Following graduation in Hornell, Mike attended Bucknell University. He and his wife, Sharon, also a Bucknell Alum, continue to follow Bucknell sports where their three children, Sandy, Laura and Eric attended. Eric, a 2007 Hornell grad and also a member of the Hornell Football team, is in his Freshman year at Bucknell. |

Friday, September 14, 2007 - Members of the 1987 Red Raider Team were honored prior to Hornell's first home game vs. Dansville. Twenty years ago Hornell and Dansville entered week 5 both undefeated. Hornell's '87 Team went on to win Hornell's first Sectional Championship and finished the season undefeated with a record of 10-0. Scores of the season can be viewed in our scores archive. |
